AFRICAN IVORY ROUTE
ARTS, CULTURE AND WILDLIFE (6 Day Tour)

The Ivory Route of South Africa is a place where elephants are granted right of way and
the gargantuan ‘upside down' trees stand sentinel over mystical and outlandish landscapes…..
This wild land, bordering Botswana, Zimbabwe and the northern reaches of the Kruger National Park, is a land of prehistoric secrets and rich archaeological sites….
Hunters decades ago identified its wealth in wildlife.
Now tourism makes its conservation viable.

Discover the secrets of Venda.

One secret of the VhaVenda are the VhaLemba or Black Jews, who have been shown to be genetically linked to the priestly caste of Judaism.  They still uphold a kosher diet, refuse pork and still practice circumcision.  They were valued for their metalwork, trading, mining and pottery.  The VhaLemba believe that their people built the Zimbabwe Ruins and came from Sena, a town in Yemen.  Archeologists have found terraced farming structures that are very similar in Yemen, Venda and the highlands of eastern Zimbabwe……

Day Four

Baleni & Kruger National Park

We travel south-east and discover another secret of the African Ivory Route, which is situated close to the border of Kruger National Park.

Using 2000-year old techniques, the local Tsonga people collect salt-encrusted sand in the Little Letaba river, which is close to the borders of Kruger National Park. They leach the sand with water (Ntsobe) through filters (Xinjhava), which are made from clay (Nwahuva) and leaves (Nhlangula). The filtered water is boiled to evaporate, leaving behind the pure crystals of Baleni Sacred Salt.

The Letaba sector shares an unfenced border with Kruger National Park, and together they form a part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park.
